Is it possible to produce for probably the largest manufacturer of electronic gadget on the planet a respectable digital camera for under $ 250 to? I'm talking about Sony here, and the camera in question is the Sony Cybershot DSCW200 digital camera. DSCW200 is an ultra-compact digital, but is based on the high side of the ultracompact category prize. Is it a worthy competitor, or just a poser?
Let's start with the most important aspect of any camera ... Image quality. Not so respectable, with the DSC-W200. Sony chose to go with 12 megapixels at this ultra-compact. Something like trying to squeeze an elephant into the passenger seat of your Austin Mini. Damn hard to do, and even if it is successful, where are you going to ride an elephant? Marketing hype aside, 12MP is complete overkill for an ultra-compact camera. The majority of the images from an ultra -> Compact camera to go on the LCD or uploaded to MySpace and Facebook pages viewed. Nobody is looking to blow this air, frames, and then they hang over the fireplace. 5 or 6 megapixels would have been good. Probably better, because the noise would have reduced.
For this price, I had greater expectations for the DSC-W200 LCD. Unfortunately, it looks like Sony cheaped here. 115,000 pixels for a 2.5-inch LCD screen is not large. There is actually quite grainy andpretty hard to get off-angle or in bright sunlight. As a basis for comparing the head of Canon cameras in this category sport 3-inch LCD screen with 230,000 pixel resolution. At least Sony has to offer an optical viewfinder. Not much, but a seeker no less.
During this next quibble is small I agree, I have to bring it simple. The included USB cable for Sony DSC-W200 is copyrighted. I hate having to buy a product that is produced only by a forcedCompany. I like choice. Sony has the annoying habit of pushing proprietary technology goes back to the beta video, Memory Stick, and now with the whole Blu-Ray fiasco. Not to say they were not good / better technologies, I just like choice.
But wait, that's not all. Sony has enough slip ups with the Cybershot DSC-W200, Sony make even the most ardent lovers cast a coquettish glance at other candidates. Here are a few other reasons:
- The zoom lens has zoom not enough
--excessive megapixels has driven prices too high
- Time for flash to recharge is not acceptable
- Big left-handed camera controls can be difficult
- Face detection is in automatic mode
- Face detection works inconsistently
- Zoom function does not work when shooting videos
This camera is well built, has a decent menu structure, is pretty small and the response time is also pretty good.
